Design Trends On Their Way Out

The thing about trends is that they come and go and sometimes come back again, kind of like mom jeans. We have all spent more time at home thanks to Covid but it has taught us a few things about where we live and what we really want from our homes. We want to make our spaces the best they can be but now we want to make them comfortable too. Here are a few trends that are on the way out for 2021.

Painted Accent Walls - Though painted walls create personality in a space they are rapidly being replaced by a new trend, wall coverings. There are so many good options available now that include texture.

Single Purpose Furniture - There is a decline in furniture that serve a single purpose. Pieces that can do double-duty as a stool that can be a drink table, a foot rest, or even a small coffee table.

Matching Furniture Sets - I’m not really sure these were ever a trend but more of an easy option for people who struggle to select furniture. They sure don’t showcase anyone’s personal style. I like to select pieces that compliment each other and allow for a client personality to show through.

Traditional Mid-Century Modern Styling - Modern mid-century is on the way out, while mix and match style is already on the way in. There is a rise in oversized down couches, organic wall treatments, and wood paneling. Bohemian mid-century is becoming a beautiful thing.

Cool Grey Tones - The cool grey tones that were so popular are now feeling cold and sterile. People are opting for warmer neutrals and whites, with pops of color.

Barn Doors - The barn door took over the design world about 10 years ago and it’s going out in style. People are replacing barn doors with classic french doors, modern and sleek pocket doors and even classic iron grid doors which are stunning.

Mass produced Factory Furniture - I think the pandemic made a lot or people take a closer look at where their stuff comes from and who makes it. People are really loving items that have a history or that are made by hand. Vintage items and small batch items such as pottery are definitely on the rise.

Fashionable Furniture That Isn’t Functional - More people are home and often work remotely and they realize they want furniture that is comfortable. People realize now that furniture needs to be more than just pretty to look at but comfortable and functional too.
