Byron Bay’s Revitalized Hotel With Old Hollywood Vibes is quickly becoming a destination stop. I have dreams of what it would be like to be a hotelier and get to do ALL the things you love under one roof. The Sunseeker is just what the name implies, sun, sand, and surf. Byron Bay just maybe the low-key Hollywood of Australia.

“New owners Jess and Dave Frid recruited an all-star creative dream team to give the tired ‘80s motel a serious spritz, and fill the retro interiors with the best of the best local makers. Replete with jagged flagstone floors and pieces from every notable creative in the Northern Rivers, this design-led new accommodation is a reflection of its truly iconic location.

Despite some ongoing restrictions on inter-state travel, The Sunseeker just officially opened for business… so if you’ve been building up a wishlist of dream travel destinations, we recommend bumping this to the top of the list!”

“There seems no end to the creative energy in this increasingly dynamic coastal town… everywhere you look there is an amazing new artist or designer to discover, or a beautifully curated shop or home worthy of a snoop inside. And now, there is The Sunseeker accommodation – a rejuvenated retro gem!”

These paved floors give me all the right feelings. Bold and simple at the same time.

The Hawaiian vibes and this gorgeous Sarah Ellison console table is a great focal point that gives guests an elevated yet relaxed vibe.

The library is filled with wares from local designers, and the cantilevered windows bring some added interest. The communal spaces are an integral part of this hotel experience. This Sunseeker is giving me a beachy Palm Springs Parker Hotel feeling and I’m here for it!

“For Jess and Dave Frid, uniting the surfy feel of old Byron Bay with its current generation of bubbling creatives was a must, when renovating their newly acquired accommodation, tucked into the backstreets of Tallow Beach. After receiving the keys to the tired 80s motel in May of last year, the pair completed whirlwind renovations in just six months – being careful to balance the original vintage vibe, with some slick contemporary tweaks.”

“The pair decided to keep the structure relatively intact, retaining the twelve-roomed main building and six freestanding weatherboard cabins, and focusing their energies on revitalizing the interiors. Drawing on references spanning from Flamingo Estate in Los Angeles and beach huts in the northern end of Ibiza – Jess and Dave wanted to capture the essence of a casual holiday destination, in a jaw-dropping location.

In this spirit, a light-grey Spanish render gives the walls a cool Californian feel, while the original plaster ceilings were knocked out to reveal soaring timber trusses above. The pair salvaged, re-used, and repurposed elements of the original finishes as they went, being careful to minimize waste, and avoid losing too much character.

Seeing as it’s Byron, the outdoor spaces are just as good as in! Beside the pool (re-poured with red concrete), the cabana and poolside bar create a tropical-inspired oasis. And while we’re on the topic of showstopping features, each room in the main building contains a crystal-adorned terrazzo benchtop, made by Five Mile Radius using waste concrete!

Let’s be Hoteliers!

Ruggable

I might be a little late to this party but I’m in love with my Ruggable kitchen runner. It wipes up so well with the little spills and washes so easily for regular cleaning. The top easily removes from the base and pops right into the washer. I can’t recommend this enough. Great for families and pets and high traffic areas. I’m in love. You can shop for yours here.

Styling 101

Vignettes

Vignettes are something we used to create on the regular while staging homes and something I consistently do to my own home over and over again. If a full room makeover isn’t an option consider creating some vignettes throughout your home. A vignette is a small arrangement of objects, including furniture that reflects the person or persons who live in the home. I love using vignettes to showcase sentimental items without it making an overwhelming statement. Vignettes often tell a story and can be the small intimate moments that create interest, character, and uniqueness. As a stylist I can tell you we obsess, you may create a vignette that changes, moves, or grows as you perfect it. The photos here should give you some examples of what a small vignette looks like.

Organize 101

Organization vs. Minimalism

It’s okay to own things. Say it out loud so everyone can hear you. It’s okay to own things. Organization can be confused with Minimalism but they are actually much different. Minimalism is a design style and lifestyle choice. A conscious decision to inherently own fewer things, a thoughtful way of considering each item you purchase. Being organized means an orderly and efficient arrangement of things and tasks. We won’t even get into Maximalism today but it’s a thing and if done right it can be quite amazing. . You can own plenty of things and keep them organized, plus we don’t want to throw out everything you own to only have to repurchase those items you really needed. Finding appropriate solutions for the things you already own and donating the things that no longer serve you is just what we love to do!
