10 Things That Are Dating Your Home

Sometimes you enter a space and you are teleported to another time like, it’s actually time stamped, or maybe like you hopped into a Delorean, and here you are in a world that feels old, but in all the bad ways. I’m sure most of you have handled these problem areas already but if not here are 10 ways to bring your home into the 21st century.

Try not to get too nostalgic. Let’s take a look.

  1. Signage

This is a trend that has been around for some time, signage. This signage gives you little reminders around your home that tell you where you are (home), or what to do (laundry), where it’s located (the beach). You can find them everywhere and I think it’s safe to say it’s overly saturated. There are so many other beautiful options, like art that inspires you, stop into Home Goods and pick up some accessories to fill spaces where your signage currently lives. Sculptures, vases, tchotchkes, anything, but it’s time that signage goes. Do you like landscapes, abstracts? Hit up Pottery Barn, West Elm, CB2 or Target there are so many options to elevate your decor.

2. The Tuscan Look

Oh, you might have to hold me back here. Do you get the same Macaroni Grill vibe that I’m getting? The heavy furniture like cabinets with red undertones, the ornate iron, and often the faux painting and red walls just doesn’t really transport me to anything I like to think of when I think of Tuscany. Times have changed and if you really must have a Tuscan home we now have access to authentic tile, stones and materials that can transport you to a really beautiful European farmhouse look that actually looks like Tuscany. Lighter muted tones and natural elements can really transform your space.

3. Color Palette

Do you remember the hunter-green, burgundy trend that hit around the late eighties and into the 90’s? Maybe paired up with a floral wallpaper border? These colors are still doable but in a more modern way, with subtle pops of color. Maybe a deep green wall or sofa. Heavy golds and dark woods have been replaced with lighter woods, and more natural color palettes, softening and lightening up a room

4. High-Gloss Floors

In the 90’s we were high glossing the hardwoods but nowadays no one is doing this. You definitely want a matte polyurethane top coat. The trend now is to refinish without the gloss and many are removing the honey colors as well. On trend flooring is natural and not shiny. Go with blonde or walnut finishes, they are beautiful!

5. Raised Counter Height Bars Or Multi Level Bars

The multi level bar. This is the most often removed item during a kitchen remodel. Having the actual counter span to the stools is better for almost everything. The raised bar blocks views, makes serving harder and creates a less streamlined look.

6. Heavy Drapes

This example may be dramatic but even in a traditional world no one is really doing this anymore. Lighten up the drapes, let the light in. The best part is it’s the easiest thing to fix, just take them down. The drapery world has come a long way and there are so many simple, clean and gorgeous options now.

7. Frosted Or Colored Glass Globes on Pendants

Frosted or color glass lighting. What were we doing back then? We were living in orange and red and blue light to match our red walls and, well excuse me I feel nauseous. Time to swap those out and the gorgeous options are endless. Depending on your fixture you can unscrew it from the pendant and simply change out the globe or replace the entire fixture. This noticeably dates your space.

8. Ornate Dark Wood With Scroll Iron

The scroll iron is gone, if you have it in your home still it’s time to donate now! Do you remember the time we were all into Southern Living? There are so many affordable options and this is a quick and easy swap that will instantly update your space.

9. Bed In A Bag

I understand that bed in a bag was intended to solve a problem for some but it’s just too matchy matchy and you can do better. Even if you do have a bed in the bag, you could easily swap out a few pieces such as pillows to create something inviting that also is a bit more creative and less like a Sears ad. If it came with a dust ruffle too well let’s just say it’s time to update!

10. Themed Decor

Curtain rods made from oars, lamps that look like fishing gear, faux bricks, you get the idea right? Steering clear of theme items goes a long long way. The whole theme vibe was a creative moment in time where we took regular items and used them to style our homes in interesting ways but that time is over and it’s time for some new updated items. I think now we are un-decorating more than ever before.

With that said, I think the take away is mostly un-decorate, use natural tones and keep your lines clean and simple for an updated modern take on your interior spaces.

Moon Milk

You might remember when mom gave you a mug of warm milk and honey before bed? Well, Moon Milk is nothing new, besides being trendy it is full of nutritional additives that prepare your body and mind for sleep. For example, according to Ayurvedic tradition, warm milk at night is beneficial for balancing pitta and vata doshas, helping to calm the nerves and soothe an overworked mind.

There are dozens of variations of moon milk, depending on the specific ingredients that are used, although most are spin-offs of turmeric milk tea. Take a look on Instagram and you’ll find more than 5,000+ drinks tagged as #moonmilk, including an array of bright yellow, purple, blue, and pink variations.

Plant-based milks can be substituted for regular milk if you want to make vegan moon milk, or if you’re lactose intolerant or just choose to avoid dairy, I love oat milk.

Ingredients commonly found in moon milk:

  • spices like turmeric, ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, black pepper and cardamom

  • ghee or coconut oil

  • adaptogen herbs such as ashwagandha, astragalus and ginseng

  • raw honey

  • superfoods like tart cherry juice, acai powder or spirulina

  • pumpkin or squash puree

  • nuts such as almonds and pistachios

  • edible flowers including dried rose petals, chamomile or lavender (you can also tea)

  • magnesium powder (an essential mineral that can reduce muscle tension and help you to feel relaxed)

  • L-theanine, an amino acid that’s considered a nootropic that has calming effects

Moon milk not only can help you with sleep but also anxiety and inflammation. Turmeric is known for its anti-inflammatory effects, and when you add in adaptogens they also reduce stress and feelings of anxiety. So maybe your mother was on to something, milk at night really does settle us into a good night’s sleep. 🌙

Fall Porch Decor

We recently did a simple porch design with Fall decor for one of our favorite clients. On this porch, although the entry area is on the bigger side the lead up to the door did limit doing anything over the top. We kept it simple with a few pops of fall color and some yummy green pumpkins.

The Little Details

Who isn’t in love with the green pumpkins this year? Stacked with round whites and muted oranges definitely brings fall to your doorstep.

How We Make Our Hand Chalked Signs

Our hand-chalked signs are a client favorite and often ordered with a full party plan but sometimes just on their own. It’s a great way to welcome guests to the desert, celebrate someone special, and sure makes a fun start to any gathering.

We hand-chalk ours in white chalk and let the colors emerge as they will. We would love to be a part of your next celebration!

The Coffee Station

Getting organized makes your life easier and your day run smoother. It’s also great to keep all of your items, in this case coffee-related, relegated to one location maximizing kitchen storage. We used some clean canisters from The Container Store and labeled each one. Tea and To-Go cups in clear slide-out bins for easy retrieval. Morning coffee made easy by Private Lyfe. 💁🏼‍♀️
