Lifestyle 101

It’s that time of year when getting your hygge (pronounced hue-gah) on is a very good thing. If you haven’t heard of the Danish Norwegian concept it is considered a way of life, a feeling of comfort and coziness, connection with loved ones, and pleasure. It’s not a decor style or self-care practice but rather an overall feeling of comfort, wellness, and contentment. There are many ways to adopt and embrace this Danish way of living, especially as the weather gets colder and we’re all looking for more “cozy” in our lives. But one of the biggest pieces of hygge is how you make your home environment for optimal health and happiness. Let’s look at 10 ways to bring more hygge into your home.

Bring Nature Indoors + Incorporate Natural Elements

Bringing the natural outdoors inside is a key component of hygge. Bringing in some fresh greens from outside, adding in unfinished woods, wood furniture, clay and textured pieces are all part of a hygge lifestyle.

Add In Candles

Candles are a huge part of the hygge way of living. The warm glow of candles creates a perfect atmosphere, lifting the spirits and casting a warm light on a winter evening.

Let In The Light

Beyond candles natural light is a huge part of hygge, the Danes take their lighting seriously. Think of warm candles burning at night but during the day lots of natural light filtering through your unbleached linen window panels and you’ll be on the right track.

Put Your Favorite Books On Display

Cozying up with a good book is also very hygge. Display all your favorite classics on a bookshelf or stacked casually on tables and even floors. Books have a special way of making a space feel more welcoming and lived-in (very hygge-appropriate).

Create “The Nook”

Every hygge home needs a place to curl up with a chunky knit blanket and relax. In fact, there’s even a Danish word to explain this perfect little spot: hyggekrog, or a cozy corner. To create your own hyggekrog, start with your comfiest chair or a favorite corner of your sofa. Layer pillows and throws to make your nook the coziest spot in your home, position it by a window or add a warm lamp for soft lighting, and add a side table for the perfect spot to put your favorite cup of tea.

Highlight Warm Elements

Centering your hygge design on a fireplace creates intimacy and warmth in your space. Focusing on warm elements such as clusters of candles, a fireplace, and lots of warm natural blankets creates the ultimate sanctuary.

Use A Warm Neutral Color Palette

By now you see that a hygge home focuses on warm tones and not cool ones. Cool tones and bright pops of color aren’t necessarily a no-go but warm neutrals like creme’s and beige’s really evoke feelings of calm and are more relaxing and inviting.

Layer In Textures

Texture, texture! The right tactiles are so important when it comes to hygge interiors, since the lifestyle is about how you emotionally feel and physically feel with your home decor. Think of sherpa, chunky knits, unfinished woods, natural lighting and some vintage touches.

Incorporate Vintage Touches

Flea markets and thrifter’s rejoice! Ancestry and nostalgia are both important parts of the hygge life, which means vintage pieces or personal touches are crucial to making a home feel as warm and welcoming as possible. In fact, household objects, furniture, and decor should be more than just things that look nice and show off our style; they should also hold emotional value or tell a story that is personal to the owner.

Keep It Simple

Keep it simple, remember the hygge life is about ease, contentment and comfort. Only fill your space with things that really make you happy. Hygge is about taking pleasure in the simple things and making sure your space brings you joy. Happy hygge-ing!

Butternut Squash Lasagna

I love all things butternut squash, kind of like those pumpkin spice people, which I am not! This 100% plant based lasagna was so satisfying and the flavor was so good! It was really easily to assemble, Dave gave it 5 ⭐️’s.

I found this recipe at my favorite go to, The Minimalist Baker. Her recipes never disappoint. I have linked it here for you!

The Prep

Just because something is plant based doesn’t mean it shouldn’t ignite your tastebuds and make you swoon. Roasting the squash with lots of garlic really added some flavor to this dish.

The Filling

When I think of lasagna I usually think of all the labor I put into my tomato sauce and then after I have created that I assemble the lasagna and it can feel like it takes all -day. Not with this plant based version, the filling is kale, mushroom, and onion and oh so yummy!

The Details

When you’re gluten-free it really is all in the details. I have tried all, and I really mean ALL of the different GF options out there over the years and not all of them taste like the pasta’s I used to eat. The GF lasagna noodles from Barilla have been my go-to for awhile until I discovered these almond flour lasagna sheets at Sprouts! No boiling, fresh pasta that tastes just like the real thing, wait, aren’t these what we should call the real thing with ingredients we can pronounce? Hmmm?

I hope you try this one and enjoy feeling great after such a decadent meal!

I Got A New Coffee Table!

I have been on the hunt for a new coffee table for more than a year now, and I finally found her at West Elm. We have been using a large ottoman as a coffee table for more than 10 years now, so I feel like we deserved it. But, you know what happens when you get a new coffee table? You also need a new rug, some new pillows and possibly 2 new unbleached linen slipcovers and maybe some new items to style said coffee table. Yep, that happened. I did some stacked books with desert vibes, some fresh fronds from my huge monstera, a large air plant, and over-sized casa beads. I added the terracotta coasters from World Market and a terracotta candle form Target to pull in my new terracotta tv nook. Styling when you live in the desert is so much fun!

Reveal coming soon, once my last slip cover arrives…. 💁🏼‍♀️
